About being a part of Anita’s Attic Creative Writing program

Possibly the best decision I have ever taken. For years I have struggled with disbelief, apathy, and denial. I was afraid, so very afraid to be what has been my calling for as long as I can remember. I was afraid of taking that first step, because of irrational fear of having no future failing this. Throughout years, writing has been my safety jacket, an excuse to tell myself that I could be average, because one fine day I would be writing a master piece. One fine day would never come because then I would lose my excuse. What would I have to live for if I failed to be a writer?

These were some of the questions I struggled with for past few years. The answer? Anita’s Attics tagline claims “You will find it here”. I am fortunate that I did find ‘it’ there. A distinct idea of what I wanted to do with my writing, and a good start. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

For my entire time in the Attic, Anita’s own journey and the little nuggets of wisdom that she passed on has been immensely helpful. It’s strange that while there are so many courses for acting, direction, etc.. there was nothing like it for writing. The course itself has an open design, and depends on the individual to a great extent. I have no idea how Anita managed to give each of us personal attention and advise to get us till here. I feel liberated and unafraid now. Anita’s attic has not suddenly transformed me into a bestseller writer, but it has given me the courage to call myself ‘a writer’, to embrace what I claim is my fate. I would forever be thankful to Anita and her team for that.

I was lost in the woods when I found out about the Attic. Anita helped me find my path. I know there are still promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep but I have a destination in mind now.
It heartens me to know that there are several others on this path, and that over the few months at the Attic, these brilliant writers have become friends.

About being a part of Anita’s Attic Creative Writing program

I write quite a bit in my day job. But I could never make much progress with my non-business writing. I had been published in smaller publications, but I wanted to start a bigger, worthier project. Anita Nair has been a favorite author and an inspiration since I read her first novel ‘The Better Man’ almost 20 years ago. I jumped at a chance to be mentored by her as I can’t imagine a better teacher and guide. Over the last twelve weeks, Anita has helped me craft my writing better. I have learnt to structure and articulate my thought a lot more clearly. Her feedback is invaluable – it has not only helped me correct my mistakes, it has also given me the motivation to write better.

About being a part of Anita’s Attic Creative Writing program

Attics are always places that hide treasures that had once been precious. I dusted and recovered my most cherished possession, my passion for writing stories, from Anita’s attic. When I joined the attic I was disillusioned and unsure about my writing skills. My confidence was at an all-time low.

At the Attic I found my tribe; a group of writers who faced the same kind of fears that troubled me and a mentor who guided us expertly past the hurdles that populated our path. The twelve-week program at Anita’s Attic was intensive and goal oriented, to say the least. The best part of any week was the individual review and feedback that we received. There were group discussions, writing exercises and always, laughter. We troubled Anita with our doubts and she would patiently answer those giving examples from her own journey as a writer. It was indeed a privilege to be mentored by one of my favorite writers.

The talks by writers, publishers, editors, and agents, the guest speakers who visited the attic, gave us an understanding of what goes behind the scenes in the life of a writer.
Thank you, Anita, for the most wonderful twelve weeks of my life.

About being a part of Anita’s Attic Creative Writing program

I came to Anita’s Attic with one goal: Finish the damn book!

For almost two years, I had floundered in an undisciplined hell called my own mind. First, there was the crazy, funny, and a little too autobiographical draft, or as I like to call it: Damn! You mean my life is supposed to have a plot?

I realized after about six months that this wasn’t the book I wanted to write. So, I started a new, more experimental draft for NaNoWriMo in Korea in November 2015. I managed to write only 25,000 words and promptly froze. Fear overtook me. I didn’t work on the draft even once after November. Self-doubt and worry set in. I wasn’t blocked—I wrote plenty of blog posts and short stories during this time—but I was stuck. In May 2016, I heard about Anita’s Attic and knew the program would help me confront the fears that were blocking my progress.

In coming to Bangalore, I hoped to find three things: a renewed energy, discipline, and guidance from a professional writer. I found all three here at Anita’s Attic, just as the tag line promised. Anita’s greatest gift to me was helping me work through major structural issues. Issues I was blind to, proving that even editors need editors. I’m proud to say that I am now editing the first draft.

About being a part of Anita’s Attic Creative Writing program

An incorrigible reader since childhood, I never cried when Sachin got bowled out for a duck or when Shahrukh Khan died in a movie. My tears, my smiles and my admiration were always reserved for writers, who could create a magical world in which I could find my realities and my dreams.

Having read most of Anita’s books, I was in a state of complete tongue-tied awe that I would get a chance to meet her, an author whose work I had admired for long. As the program started, I started admiring the single-minded focus with which Anita urged us to work on one story idea and to keep developing it over the twelve weeks as she gave insightful feedback on each element of writing and storytelling. For many of us who try to juggle full-time corporate work with part-time writer-in-waiting dreams, it is easy to let go of the words that no one other than us seem to be waiting for.

It was fascinating for me to see the discipline and dedication with which Anita mentored each of us and helped us hone our writing voice. The one-on-one feedback made my effort more real and meaningful than I had dared to think it could ever be. The interactions with fellow writers, literary agents and publishers gave concrete shape to both the art and the business of the writing world.

Questions that I had always asked myself while reading books were now answers I heard from Anita about the origin of story ideas and the importance of fact-checking and researching every element of our work. And through it all, the warmth and humour of Anita the person, made the brilliance and insight of Anita, the writer, even more real and humane. The program is the inspiration first-time authors need as they try take their own writing seriously.

    Excerpt from published work:

The boat took them deeper and deeper into the forest of green shimmers and blue ripples. A lone crane glided forward, as if nodding a gentle hello. The trees that hugged the shore bent over, as if trying to protect an untold secret. They had almost reached Poovar, a lost island locked between the land, the backwaters and the sea, the sound of the silence broken only by the lashing of the waves and the flight of the birds.

About being a part of Anita’s Attic Creative Writing program

Among the numerous roles I play, story-telling is relevant to all. I always wanted to be a writer too. I applied to Anita’s Attic without any hope of being selected. I was surprised when I was selected. Was elated. Did not join batch 3, my calendar was an excuse! Thanks to family’s push, joined batch 4.

It has been a beautiful journey with the mentor (Anita Nair), the batch (each one already a writer) and the guests.

Takeaways : The power of discipline even in a creative activity such as writing, power of subconscious, being truly present, overcoming writer’s block/self-limiting beliefs, nuances of character/crafting/storytelling, art of mentoring, etc. Writers are normal human beings!

anil-ananthaswamyFor the first time ever in four seasons Anita’s Attic had as its guest speaker a non-fiction writer. The brilliant Anil Ananthaswamy who kept the class ( 12 in the room + 1 online from New Zealand) and an alumnus from a previous season and I transfixed in less than five minutes.
